Food As A Racial Identifier In Invisible Man. For Many
Food As A Racial Identifier in Invisible Man For many people, culture and identity are closely tied to identity-- sometimes so closely that the things they do, eat, or say may not even feel like a conscious decision. However, from an outsiderââ¬â¢s point of view, it is easy to note the differences between cultures in many different ways. One of the most tangible examples of this is, of course, food. When speaking to many people from older generations, it is easy to see how much food is entwined in their stories from the past, whether they come from far away or are still living where they were born. Throughout Ralph Ellisonââ¬â¢s Invisible Man, food is heavily used in many different ways to represent multiple races. In Invisible Man, the mainâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ellison, the author, writes; I downed the acid drink, proud to have resisted the pork chops and grits. It was a an act of discipline (178). It is vital to note that several of the foods mentioned-- especially grits-- have already been recognized as racially-charged. In addition to this, the fact remains that African Americans of this time were generally not of high economic standing, and thus had to prepare foods that fit their means. This idea of low-income or typically ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠food continues throughout the novel. While in a majority African American neighborhood, Harlem, the narrator observes the following scene; ...Withering fruits and vegetables. I could smell the stench of decaying cabbage. A watermelon huckster stood in the shade beside his truck, holding up a long slice of orange-meated melon, crying his wares with hoarse appeals to nostalgia, memories of childhood, green shade and summer coolness. (460). Thi s scene that the unnamed narrator is describing to the audience fits under the description of a common concept known as a ââ¬Å"food desertâ⬠. That is, the area is so incredibly impoverished that individuals living in the area have a very little amount of nutritional options. The people residing in Harlem are too poor to even afford fresh cabbage, much less more substantial foods, such as meat or bread. African Women Opposing Gender Inequality Essay Example For Students
African Women Opposing Gender Inequality Essay In the novel ââ¬Å"So Long A Letterâ⬠by Mariama Ba, is written in the form of a few short letters and pieced together in the form of a novel. It talks about a woman that experiences gender inequality, because of her culture, and how she struggles to escape the bonds that are tying her to be a victim of this. The novel begins with Ramatoulaye, a Senegalese woman who shares her troubles with her childhood best friend Aissatou through letters. First, she reminds her friend Aissatou of how long theyââ¬â¢ve met. Then she recounts what has happened, and tells the tragic news that her husband (Modou) had died, and how she has to manage everything. Shortly after her husbandââ¬â¢s death, she faces Tamsir (Modouââ¬â¢s brother) who proposes that she be his 4th wife. She also has to deal with the co-wife who was formerly her daughterââ¬â¢s friend. She has been forced to deal with Binetou (co-wife) for the last 5 years and later on, in the novel, she also has to confront Aissat ou her daughter namesake of her best friend, as she finds out that her daughterââ¬â¢s pregnant. Through the novel, Ramatoulaye represents the African women, and what they should do to break free of the gender inequality thatââ¬â¢s affecting them. In their household, only the men make the decisions, and the women are never asked for their opinions. For example, when Ramatoulaye is mourning her husbandââ¬â¢s death, Tamsir just approaches her without even giving so much as a hind that he wants her to be his wife. For the first time, she promises herself that ââ¬Å"This time shall speak out.â⬠(Ba 60) For a long time, she hasnââ¬â¢t opposed anything or anyone, so this time she chooses to not hold back her emotions any longer. Her voice must be heard because ââ¬Å" voice has known thirty years of silence, thirty years of harassment. It bursts out, violent, sometimes sarcastic, sometimes contemptuous.â⬠(Ba 60) After turning down Tamsirââ¬â¢s offer of being his wife, she tries to smooth things over between her former lover, Daouda Dieng who is a politician an d is married with children. If Ramatoulaye had not experienced polygamy, then she might consider Daouda, but since she had, she didnââ¬â¢t want to tear another family apart. When Daouda confesses his feelings for her, which hasnââ¬â¢t changed in the past years, Ramatoulaye confesses that even though she too likes him, she canââ¬â¢t start a relationship with someone whoââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"wife and children further complicates the situation.â⬠(Ba 71) When Ramatoulaye learns that she has just become another part of the system of polygamy, she ââ¬Å"forces to check inner agitationâ⬠(Ba 39) and to appear to not be stressed out by the news. In the above example of polygamy, it is shown that onlyh the men can have more than one wife, whereas if the women have two husbands, the society will consider it as an abnormal thing. Also, in the novel, education is another example of gender inequality. If the females go to school and study, the ââ¬Å"school turns our girls into devils who lure our men away from the right pathâ⬠(Ba 17) they will be seen through societyââ¬â¢s eyes as an outcast. For Aissatou, she couldnââ¬â¢t be a goldsmith because ââ¬Å"Each profession has its code, known only the initiated and transmitted from father to son!â⬠(Ba 18) Almost all of the females that want a job, canââ¬â¢t have one, because their job will be affected bythe simple reason, that they are females. In conclusion, throughout the novel, there are many examples of gender inequality ,and sometimes Senegal isnââ¬â¢t the only place that experiences gender inequality. Throughout the world gender inequality is still happening, and it should be stopped.

Computer Engineering essays
Computer Engineering essays Computer engineering involves computer hardware and machines, but precisely what does a computer engineer do? What is the job like and what must one do to become a computer engineer? How does the University of Maine prepare students for this career or others, and what is the school like in terms of its environment, campus, student body, activities, and other? What does it take to attend school there and how much does it cost? Computer hardware engineers design, develop, research, and test hardware and supervise its manufacture and installation. Hardware refers to computer chips, circuit boards, computer systems, and related equipment such as keyboards, modems, printers, and speakers. The job description of a computer engineer is very similar to that of an electronics engineer; computer hardware engineers work exclusively with computers and their related equipment. (www.bls.gov...) Aside from design and development tasks, computer hardware engineers may supervise the manufacture and installation of computers and equipment. The rapid advances in computer technology are largely a result of the research, development, and design efforts of computer hardware engineers. To keep up with technological advances, these engineers must continually update their knowledge. (www.bls.gov...) The number of computer hardware engineers is relatively small compared with the number of computer-related workers who work with software or computer applications. There were approximately 74,000 computer hardware engineering jobs in 2002. Nearly 40 percent worked in computer and electronic manufacturing. About one-quarter worked in professional, scientific, and technical services firms, many of which provided services to the computer industry. Most of the rest were employed in telecommunications. (www.bls.gov...) There may be moderately difficult competition for computer engineers to find jobs because the number of deg...
